Dear Parents,

I want to touch base with you since our students do not receive a grade for Positive Steps class.  We named our program “Positive Steps” because there are steps you can take to keep your mind and body healthy.  In Positive Steps, we work on the life skills necessary for our children to make wise decisions as they grow older.

I hope your child has shared some of the information that we learned in Positive Steps so far this year.  You can always check the Counselor’s Corner on the WCS website for updates on Positive Step lessons.  Here are a few of the topics we’ve covered.

1st and 2nd Grade: We learned about Whole Body Listening, above the line/below the line behavior, good manners and personal space.

3rd Grade:  Our year-long focus will be on empathy skill development.  We discussed what empathy means, evaluated our current level of empathy, learned about non-verbal communication, listening skills and recognizing how other people feel.

4th Grade: Fourth grade is exploring and evaluating their own character development.  Our primary focus has been on honesty and responsibility.

It is so rewarding to watch and listen to our students reflect and grow in their personal and social development.  They have so many insightful and sincere questions during our class.  Their honesty and curiosity makes my job a joy.

If you have any questions about the class, please do not hesitate to contact me.  As always, I appreciate the opportunity to get to know each and every child in the Lower School this year.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Hearne

Positive Steps

This is a voice scale that we use in Positive Steps and Early Childhood.  It is very useful in helping children regulate the volume of their voices.  I even used it with my own children at home.

Dear Parents,

What a joy and privilege it is to teach your children in Positive Steps this year! We have named our program “Positive Steps” because there are positive or “good” steps you can take to keep your mind and body healthy. In Positive Steps, we work on the life skills necessary for our children to make wise decisions as they grow older. The activities will vary from grade to grade, but hopefully everyone enjoys exploring a little about themselves and their world.

The following is a general list of the subject matter we cover.
1st Grade- Feelings, Manners, Whole Body Listening, Character Traits
2nd Grade- Coping with Feelings, Manners, Character Traits
3rd Grade- Developing Empathy, Manners, Character Traits
4th Grade- Accepting Ourselves and Others, Manners, Character Traits

I am happy to answer any questions. I look forward to the rest of the year with your child.

 Sincerely,

 Jennifer Hearne
